Two More Talladega Raffle Donors
I would like to thank the City of Opp and everyone involved with the Rattlesnake Rodeo for the kindness they displayed to the Troy University Campus Chapter of Troy-Pike Habitat For Humanity International.
In particular I would like to thank Mayor Edgar, Opp Director of Planning Don Childre, and Liz Lindsey for the help they were to the Campus Chapter. Through their help and the donation of a booth we collected over $400.00 in cash via donations, and through the sales of our Talladega 500 Raffle tickets.
We also want to thank some General Contractors and other business owners who donated their time and efforts to our cause. One individual has offered at least 5 acres of land to build Habitat houses on. This land is in Covington County and will go to the new Habitat Affiliate being launched in Covington County. This will be a great starting asset for the new affiliate. Another Business offered to donate a forklift and the fuel to run it. I am not sure just what the dollar value of the donations would turn out to be. But I am positive that it would exceed $10,000.00 and has a chance due to the donation of the forklift to exceed $100,000.00. Thanks to these businesses a lot of people will be helped and our community will become a better place. You are to be applauded.
The donation of a $50.00 booth by the City of Opp and the generosity of the donors has quite possibly turned into a 6 figure day for Habitat For Humanity. The people of Opp, the Rodeo organizers, and all the people who attended the Opp Rattlesnake Rodeo have our deepest appreciation and we love them from the bottom of our hearts.
After the Enterprise tornados, the Troy University Campus Chapter organized 58 people to go to Enterprise to help with clean-up on the Saturday after the storms struck. We would like to thank Congressman Everett's office for helping us to get the proper contact information, thus enabling us to be there.
At the Opp Rattlesnake Rodeo this past Saturday there were many people who came by our booth and dropped donations into our jar, telling us they were from Enterprise. These donations were also very touching to us because of having went down there and becoming personally involved with their tradgedy.
A lot of 8-10 year old children stopped by and donated money. It was impressive to us that we volunteer for an organization that is recognized by so many people, and for it to be recognized and appreciated by these children was a humbling experience.
One family of five stopped by and wanted to know if we accepted change. They told me all they had that they could give was 28 cents. I told them we accepted just a smile, or a kind word, and that yes we would accept even a penny if it was offered. He told me then that he didn't think 28 cents would make any difference. I then told him that 20,000 people were expected at the Rodeo that day and that if everyone gave as much as he had given we would have donations exceeding $5,000.00. This family then all smiled at once with the biggest smiles imaginable, realizing that 28 cents does make a difference.
This moment was one I will always remember and cherish. It was awful cold Saturday, and the wind blew almost all day. I was sun-burned and wind-chapped, and extremely uncomfortable. My face got blistered and hurts pretty bad. But I would go through those same extreme conditions and worse just for a chance to meet another family with only 28 cents to give.
Thank you everyone,
Fred Johnson
