Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates
Volunteer Of The Year
Dr. Eugene Omasta
Troy-Pike Habitat For Humanity |
Dr. Eugene Omasta is known in Pike County as "Mr. Habitat".
He is a well respected member of the community and represents the heart and soul of the Pike County Habitat For Humanity Affiliate.
Dr. Omasta has served the Troy-Pike HFH affiliate as a volunteer and a Board of Director since the affiliate's inception over 10 years ago.
Dr. Omasta will retire from the Board of Directors in May of 2007.
Dr. Omasta is a masterful fundraiser, and an incredible public relations coordinator, a caring family supporter, highly motivated construction assisstant, and a tremendous source of recruitment for volunteers.
In fact, more than half of the current Board Members serving the Troy-Pike HFH were recruited to service by Dr. Omasta.
The Board Members applaud his "community service with devotion" through each and every board meeting.
Dr. Omasta has been instrumental in securing sizable donations from many local donors.
Whether convincing local bankers of the importance of our mission and generating large financial commitments or rolling up his sleeves to help co-organize our Annual Giant Cake and Cookie Sale, his ability to raise funds makes a tremendous impact on the work of HFH in our county.
During 2006, more than 70% of the funds donated to Troy-Pike HFH could be traced directly to Dr. Omasta.
Dr. Omasta is also a frequent volunteer on the build site.
One Board Member recalls when they first joined HFH in Pike County, the story Dr. Omasta always shared about driving the heavy equipment on the work site.
Dr. Omasta is a semi-retired college professor, who taught Physics for over 25 years - he still teaches ocassionally and works as a coordinator for the Education Outreach Program in Alabama.
He has enjoyed many great life experiences, but the excitement in his story about driving the "backhoe" inspired this individual to become a Board Member.
He has helped painting, install vinyl, help with roofing, raise the walls, and almost any other tasks a volunteer is encouraged to do!
Dr. Omasta truly cares for our home-owners.
He visits the build site more than any other volunteer and continued to visit after construction was complete.
He continues to visit with our home owner families long after they have moved into their new homes.
In addition, he takes on the responsibility of our media coverage including Homeowner Dedications, Donor Recognitions, and interview on behalf of HFH.
He is known to our local media market and around our community as "Mr. Habitat".
