AB Troy, a development company owned by Don Allen Development and University Housing Group, has purchased parcels on Elm Street adjacent to the university and has donated the four existing houses to Pike County Habitat for Humanity.
"The land will be used to build new high-end housing designed for students for Troy University," said Wes Bradley, AB Troy partner. "The time is right with Troy's expanded enrollment to take the university's student housing to the next level. The homes on the land were planned for demolition, so donating them to Habitat for Humanity was the right thing to do."
Fred Johnson, AmeriCorps Vista with Pike County Habitat for Humanity, said the donation of the four houses is very much appreciated.
"We are so grateful," he said. "To have these four houses donated to Habitat, well, we are actually overwhelmed. We have never had a donation like this before. It is going to mean so much to our community."
Johnson said a condition of the donation is that the houses will have to be moved.
"But they are all nice houses and in good condition," he said. "Habitat is going to have a house cleanup on Saturday, Aug. 11, to get the houses ready to be auctioned off on Aug. 18."
One of the Elm Street houses is an 1,872-square-foot structure and has three bedrooms, two full baths, living room, dining room, large den with fireplace, kitchen and laundry room.
"This house is especially nice," Johnson said. "All of the houses have great potential. Anybody who has property and wants a house at a good price will want to bid on these donated houses."
The donation of the houses will mean that from one to four houses will be built for Pike County families in need of a home of their own.
"We are getting ready to build a Habitat home in Brundidge," Johnson said. "We already have three families that have been selected for homes. This donation of the four homes could mean that Pike County Habitat for Humanity will be able to construct three or four homes each year for several years."
The houses are located at 611, 701 and 703 Elm Street.
The developers, Don Allen Developers from Auburn and Virginia-based University Housing Group, have partnered in the past and have built several highly successful projects in Auburn.
UHG has been a leader in the student housing industry for more than 20 years with developments at universities throughout the southeast and as far west as Nevada. The project is tentatively named Campus Edge at Troy.
